The Ovacık Agriculture and Sakız Sheep Festival (Ovacık Tarım ve Sakız Koyunu Festivali) is held each autumn (late September/early October) in the village square of Ovacık, 5km south of Çeşme, and is organised by the Çeşme Municipality. The two-day weekend event celebrates the region’s deep agricultural roots. It highlights the globally rare Sakız sheep, alongside other local treasures such as the Çeşme melon, mastic trees, onions, thyme, and lavender. Its purpose is both cultural and economic: to preserve traditional farming and livestock practices, while giving local producers and artisans a platform to showcase their work.
The festival blends competition, culture, and community with activities such as “Best Sakız Sheep” and “Best Çeşme Melon” contests, cooking workshops, local product markets, folk dances, and live concerts. More than just a fair, it has become a lively meeting point for residents and visitors, strengthening awareness of sustainable agriculture and bringing tourism benefits to the area, while ensuring that Çeşme’s rural identity and heritage continue to thrive.

The festival typically starts both days at 11 am with a band and cookery workshops, featuring items such as rice with artichoke, turmeric sourdough bread, cheese paste, mastic cookies, Ovacık manti (small, filled pasta dumplings), and Ovacık melon lemonade. Competition entries are accepted, and the “Best Çeşme Melon” competition is judged and prizes awarded on day one. The first day is typically completed with a concert at around 8.30 pm.
The second day is dedicated to Chios (Sakız) Sheep breeding workshops and competition evaluation. In the afternoon, the award ceremony for the “Best Chios Sheep” takes place. Chios sheep are classified as a semi-fat-tailed breed, bred primarily for milk production, and are commonly believed to have originated on the Greek island of Chios. Ewes grow to 70kg and rams to 90 kg; over 210 days of lactation, ewes can produce up to 270kg of milk.
